'Needed to do a lot more': Darren Fletcher says £11m Forest man fluffed his lines vs Ipswich

Nottingham Forest taking on Ipswich Town might not have been the fixture eagerly anticipated by the supporters but for Jota Silva, it was one he will never forget.

The Portuguese attacker was handed a starting berth for the first time since he came to the Premier League during the summer transfer window.

Silva has made a number of substitute appearances this season but Nuno Espirito Santo finally gave him a go from the off at the weekend.

It was the attacker who won the penalty which led to the winning goals and Ipswich defender Cameron Burgess was incensed with Silva afterwards.

Silva replaced Anthony Elanga in the team after the winger picked up a minor injury during the game against Arsenal and was only fit enough for the bench.

Darren Fletcher suggests he was disappointed with Jota Silva

Forest were indebted to Chris Wood with the striker equalling Bryan Roy’s record of 24 Premier League goals in the Garibaldi.

Silva was the man in the limelight though and although he won the penalty that resulted in Wood scoring his ninth of the season, he didn’t do much else during the contest.

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher is an avid Forest fan and he thinks the versatile performer needs to do more if he starts again.

He told the Forest Focus podcast: “I thought apart from the first five minutes, Jota Silva needed to do a lot more than he did.

“I’ve been someone who has wanted him to come in from the start to see what he can offer but it has to be a lot more than that.”

Silva needs run of games to truly show what he can do

It was always going to be a period of transition for Silva as he looks to adapt to life in England.

He was a star in Portugal last season but playing in the Premier League was always going to provide a step up.

Silva started really well on Saturday and nobody can deny that he essentially won the penalty that Forest scored the winning goal.

However, we do agree a little bit with Fletcher in the sense that Silva needs to perhaps keep things a little bit simpler and not make so many errors in possession.

Silva didn’t bring anything to the table on Saturday that Elanga couldn’t have done and he will look to improve the next time he makes a start.
