Liverpool have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Nico Williams
Williams has been one of the best young players in recent seasons
The 22 year old helped Spain win Euro 2024 this summer
Nico Williams has been a superb player for both club and country in recent years. The 22 year old recently helped Spain to win Euro 2024 this summer. He even scored in final against England and showed the world his ability at the highest level.
Williams was linked with many top clubs after the Euros. He was most heavily linked with Barcelona who were keen to pair him up with his international teammate Lamine Yamal. Alongside Barca, Arsenal were also keen to sign the 22 year old.
But, a move never materialised and Williams had to stay at Athletic Club. Barca did not make any new signings but are still going very strong right now. On the other hand, Gunners signed Sterling on loan but that deal has not paid off for Mikel Arteta.
Liverpool join Arsenal in the race to sign Nico Williams
As per The Athletic, Barca may now rethink their choice to go after Williams due to the superb form of Raphinha. The report futher states that Arsenal are still interested in 22 year old but are now joined by Liverpool in the race.
Arsenal will view Williams as an upgrade on Martinelli and Trossard. Both of these current Arsenal stars have failed to stay consistent in the recent years. In addition, Jesus has also been unable to help.
Jesus is very likely to get sold next year whereas Gunners are very likely to reject the offer of signing Sterling permanently. Hence, someone like Williams will become a necessity for Arteta if he wants to win major titles.
At Liverpool, Williams will have a far bigger role to play. He will be used on right wing in the place of Mohamed Salah who will be out of contract at the end of season. This will surely not be easy but Williams has already proved himself on the top stages of football.
