Manchester United to Battle With Manchester City for Marquee Target

Manchester United have had a pretty good start to their new chapter under Ruben Amorim and head into the upcoming game against Arsenal with a two-game winning run. They do realise the need for improving their frontline with more prolific strikers and it looks like the Premier League giants are now pushing to sign Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres.

Manchester United Begin Viktor Gyokeres Transfer Talks

How Do United Face Manchester City Competition for Gyokeres?

Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg has reported that the Red Devils have now made “initial concrete talks” about the prospect of signing the Sporting striker. It’s added that they are looking into making a move for him in the 2025 summer transfer window and that United are “fully involved” about bringing him to Old Trafford.

This isn’t that surprising considering that Amorim loved working with Gyokeres at Sporting and started to get the best out of him in his 3-4-3 system. However, Plettenberg adds that the Red Devils are aware that they’ll need to prioritise player sales to generate the necessary funds to sign him.

It’s also added that Manchester City have now intensified their efforts to sign the Swedish forward. The Portuguese side’s sporting director, Hugo Vianna, will be taking up a similar role at the Etihad next year and is claimed to be pushing strongly to bring Gyokeres to the club.

What Has Gyokeres Said About Possible Manchester United Move?

Speculation has been adrift about the 25-year-old forward making a possible switch to Old Trafford ever since Amorim took up his role as their head coach. Gyokeres recently spoke about the possibility of joining a big club in the 2025 January window and reuniting with the Portuguese gaffer at United, stating: “It’s not something I think about, nor something I give any importance to. It’s just rumours, nothing concrete. Of course, I want to finish the season at Sporting, I’m enjoying my time there. I don’t feel stressed about making a change in the future. We’ll see when the time comes. [Amorim] probably already has strikers there… It’s fun but not something I attach any importance to because it’s talk and nothing concrete.”

Despite that, the Red Devils are clearly pushing in their efforts to sign Gyokeres next year. The Sweden international is rumoured to have an £85 million release clause in his contract, which seems fair considering he’s already scored 24 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions so far this season. United could face a stern challenge in activating that over all the other competitors in 2025, though.
