Chris Sutton has described anyone who expected Sean Dyche to achieve a top-eight finish with Everton this season as “an idiot”.
The Toffees have had an up-and-down start to the campaign, which has seen just two Premier League wins while losing six and drawing five.
The Goodison club are two points off the relegation zone and that has inevitably seen the manager come under pressure, but this early-season form hasn’t surprised Sutton.
While speaking on BBC 5 Live (2 December), he said: “He took over a complete mess at Everton but it’s no surprise that they’re languishing near the bottom of the table.
“Anybody who thought this was an Everton team who were going to get a top-eight place this season is an idiot.”

The Gwladys Street End faithful don’t necessarily have high expectations for their side and their season prospects but just want something to cheer about.
That hasn’t truly been the case this campaign, with just one home win so far, which was far from a classic against Crystal Palace.
The lack of enjoyment and recognised playing style is continuing to rub certain fans up the wrong way and that could eventually see Dyche lose his job on Merseyside.
The counterargument for this is that the ex-Burnley boss provides the Toffees with stability and proved his ability to keep his side in the division last year.

This has created a split atmosphere around Goodison when it comes to the manager, but that shouldn’t stop fans from wanting to see positive football and results.
There is quality in the squad from Jordan Pickford and Jarrad Branthwaite to Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil, so there is little excuse for playing defensive football with limited reward.
