Newcastle United's starting XI when they last beat Liverpool in 2015

Newcastle United fans have to cast their minds back nine years to remember the last victory over Liverpool.

The Magpies have a miserable record against Wednesday night’s opponents, and it will be a tall order for Eddie Howe to change that.

Arne Slot has hit the ground running on Merseyside with Liverpool winning 18 out of their 20 games under his management this season.

Liverpool sit at the top of the Premier League table ahead of their trip to St James’ Park this week, while Newcastle have slumped into the bottom half and will want to bounce back from their toothless display against Crystal Palace on the weekend.

Clashes between Newcastle and Liverpool have provided some of the most dramatic and entertaining matches in Premier League history, and fans could be treated to more of the same this week.

Newcastle United’s XI when they beat Liverpool 2-0

Newcastle’s last win over Liverpool came in December 2015 with Steve McClaren in charge of the side.

It was Jurgen Klopp’s debut season, but the German suffered a 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park with Martin Skrtel scoring an own goal in the 69th minute before Georginio Wijnaldum sealed the victory with a 90th-minute goal. He would later go on to join Liverpool for a £23m fee.

Newcastle United record vs Liverpool

Since Newcastle’s win in 2015, the two sides have met 15 times across all competitions.

Liverpool have won 11 of those 15 meetings, including all of the last six matches.

The latest meeting between Newcastle and the Reds was on New Years Day in 2024 when Eddie Howe’s side lost 4-2 with Alexander Isak and Sven Botman scoring in the defeat.

Remarkably there has only been one 0-0 result between the two sides in the last 50 years. The 0-0 back in 2020 was the only one in the past 81 meetings. There are usually goals in this fixture, and lots of them.

Howe’s record against Liverpool doesn’t inspire much confidence either. He has faced them 19 times in his career and only won once with 17 defeats.
