Moises Caicedo has quite clearly been one of the biggest success stories at Chelsea so far this season.

There’s five Chelsea players that have started every Premier League match so far this campaign, including Moises Caicedo. Incidentally, the other ever-presents are Robert Sanchez, Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson.

Caicedo received plenty of criticism during last year’s debut season at Stamford Bridge, struggling to deal with the pressure of his £115m price tag. However, there’s not many people mentioning his transfer fee now that he’s consistently delivering outstanding performances for the Blues.

Frank Leboeuf says Chelsea’s Caicedo is a “game-changer” with his impact in the centre of the park.

The 23-year-old central midfielder covers every blade of grass in games. Remarkably, he slotted in effortlessly at right-back when his team didn’t have possession during Sunday’s 3-0 league win at home to Aston Villa.

Moises Caicedo is focused on defending

Caicedo has just made some interesting comments about his mindset on the football pitch. Apparently, his focus on very much on the defensive side of the game rather than offensively.

“I don’t score too many but the most important thing for me is to help the team in defence. If the other team does not score a goal, I go home happy. So, after Sunday [against Aston Villa] I was happy because I helped the defence,” Caicedo said, as quoted by Chelsea’s official website.

While Caicedo offers a lot on the ball with his range of passing and football IQ, his bread and butter is his defensive work.

The Ecuador international only has two goals in 63 Blues appearances, so many may want the midfielder to chip in with a few more strikes. Romeo Lavia says Chelsea teammate Caicedo proves he can shoot in training, but it’s just not something he does much on a matchday.

Chelsea have a defensive juggernaut

Chelsea’s backline definitely needs to improve still when it comes to their defensive record and conceding too many goals. However, they get so much protection when Caicedo is sitting in front of them in midfield.

There’s still a long way to go before Caicedo can be spoken about in the same light as N’Golo Kante, but there’s definitely some similarities with how the former Chelsea great used to play.

Caicedo’s went under the radar against Villa with another excellent performance, which has started to become the norm for him.
