What Southampton can do against Chelsea tonight that hasn’t happened for nearly 40 years

There will no doubt be an expectation amongst Chelsea supporters that their sides will make it three Premier League wins in a row tonight against Southampton.

Enzo Maresca is taking his side to the team who are bottom of the Premier League, while the Blues continue their push inside the top three of the table.

It remains to be seen whether the Chelsea boss decides to rest a number of his key players for the trip to the South Coast, with him normally rotating his entire side when the Blues have taken part in cup games in the week.

It is important for Chelsea to not underestimate their Premier League opponents, who in the last two weeks have caused real issues to title favourites Liverpool.

Southampton could win three in a row vs Chelsea for first time in 39 years

Last time Southampton were in the top flight they picked up wins against both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter’s Chelsea side despite on their way to being relegated.

A win for the Saints tomorrow night would see them make it three in a row against the Blues, something that according to BBC Sport has not happened in 39 years.

Victory for the Blues however would maintain the pressure on Arsenal, who face Manchester United and currently have an identical record to them this season.

Who could return for Chelsea against Southampton?

Maresca took a number of risks with his starting side against Aston Villa last weekend, choosing not to name a recognised right-back in his starting side.

This was likely because Malo Gusto was still on his way back from injury, however tomorrow looks a great opportunity for Gusto to make his return to the starting XI.

Noni Madueke is another regular starter who dropped out at the weekend, with the manager preferring the pairing of Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto.

Maresca should recall Madueke to the starting side, with them likely to be on top against Southampton tonight.
