Unai Emery has some big calls to make ahead of Aston Villa’s clash against Brentford on Wednesday night.
Amadou Onana is absent for Aston Villa because he is still recovering from picking up a foot injury whilst on international duty last month.
The 23-year-old has started life at Villa Park in a positive manner, but injuries are now starting to pour cold water over his opening few months in claret and blue colours, as his teammates’ form takes a turn for the worst over this winter period.
Aston Villa are winless in eight matches and they have slipped into the bottom half of the Premier League table ahead of two huge home matches.
Starting with the visit of free-scoring Brentford, Emery will then welcome newly-promoted Southampton to the Midlands on Saturday and he is fully aware that maximum points need to be delivered.
Given the injuries to certain areas of the pitch, you presume some players pick themselves, such as Boubacar Kamara starting in his defensive midfield role.
Given that Aston Villa also have Champions League matters to deal with next week, then fans will be hoping Onana will be back as soon as possible because his presence is needed.

For those unable to see the image, Onana is seen wearing an oxygen mask, holding the peace sign and adding in the caption ‘recharging’.

From a defensive aspect, Villa are all over the shop in the Premier League and they have shipped 22 goals this term.
Onana has been part of that, but he hasn’t played alongside Kamara – the two bonafide defensive midfielders in the team.
Perhaps that’s something Emery will consider given the team’s defensive struggles, with WhoScored rating his Premier League performances at 6.77.
