**Newcastle United are gearing up to welcome Premier League leaders Liverpool to St James' Park on Wednesday night**
The season has been anything but easy with bad results and poor player form meaning the Magpies currently sit 11th in a tight league table. Despite this they are just four points off the top four.
One player who is struggling in particular is England international Anthony Gordon who has only found the net twice.
The summer transfer window was wild for Newcastle who ended up failing to sign a single first team player making it two windows without one. The sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to help get rid of ongoing PSR issues also didn't help.
Gordon was embroiled in his own transfer saga in summer with a move to Wednesday's opponents on the cards - even though the move didn't go through it seems like his head could have been turned by outside influencers.

Liverpool remain interested in Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon
----------------------------------------------------------------
According to Craig Hope, The Reds retain an interest in the 23-year-old who came fairly close to an exit last summer. A deal was in place with Liverpool which was very close to going through.
Alongside the sale of Anderson and Minteh, it is thought that the deal was called off if it was agreed that young defender Jarell Quansah was part of the deal.
The deal collapsed but it shows how close Newcastle came to losing one of their star players.
Hope also suggested that Gordon wasn't informed that the move was off until after The Magpies had found an alternative to loosen the stranglehold of PSR. It looked like desperate times for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and co who were just hours away from a possible points deduction.
Anthony Gordon's possible move to Liverpool became a hot topic
--------------------------------------------------------------
In summer Gordon was included in England's 26 man squad for EURO 2024 among the players in that squad included Liverpool stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.
The rumours of Gordon's move came about during that tournament and it spread like wildfire reportedly becoming "talk of the camp".
Hope reports that Gordon confided with his England teammates and the rumours got so intense that Alexander-Arnold began signing "he's coming home".
All that talk surely doesn't do Gordon any good with fans thinking that those links in the summer have hampered his performances in the Premier League this season.
Still, Gordon has recently signed a new deal with the club and frequently raves about how much he loves living on Tyneside, referring to it as home.
