Lewis Miley is set to be left out of Newcastle United’s squad against Liverpool tonight (kick-off 7:30pm).
The 18-year-old hasn’t started a game for the Magpies since March with his only appearance since then coming as a late substitute in the recent 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Chelsea. Miley has played more minutes for England under-21s after featuring against Spain and Netherlands last month.
Miley made 26 appearances for United last season but saw his breakthrough year cut short because of a back problem. He was scheduled to return at the beginning of pre-season but fractured his metatarsal in the off-season, ruling him out for seven months in total.

Miley was not included in the matchday squad for the 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham United and the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace. On Friday, along with Matt Targett, Miley played 79 minutes as the young Magpies beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Whitley Park.

And on Tuesday night, Miley was back in action for Newcastle’s second string and played his first full 90 minutes since his injury as they lost 3-2 to Boston United in the National League Cup. The teenager lined up alongside Isaac Hayden in midfield.
That all-but confirms Miley’s absence from the squad against Liverpool this evening. Miley has been on the bench five times this season but the return of Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier from injury has increased the number of options available to head coach Eddie Howe.
