Newcastle United have reportedly contacted Viktor Gyokeres’ agent over a possible £80million move.

A staggering 24 goals in 21 games for Sporting Lisbon this season has made the Swede one of Europe’s hottest properties. Coupled with the 43 strikes he bagged last year, Gyokeres has emerged as a force on the continent.

A stunning hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League reintroduced him to the English market following spells at Brighton, Swansea City and Coventry City. While his last Premier League stint ended without making a Premier League appearance, at 26, Gyokeres is now primed for a big move.

Manchester United have been fiercely linked with the striker following Ruben Amorim’s appointment. The Red Devils, despite spending £115million on No.9s in the past 18 months, have looked lightweight up front.

Amorim nurtured Gyokeres into the force he is today and are rumoured to be interested. Despite having an £80million release clause, the BBC reported Sporting may accept less next summer.

FootballTransfers claim Newcastle are in the running as they aim to beef up their attacking options. While a right-sided forward appears the priority, the Magpies have suffered fitness woes to Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak in recent times.

The piece suggests Gyokeres would entertain the thought of linking up with international striker partner Isak, who is also receiving speculation regarding his future. Toon legend Shearer urged St James’ Park chiefs to inquire for the 26-year-old last month following his hat-trick heroics against City.

However, any move is unlikely to happen in January, with the former Coventry man committing his future to Sporting until the end of the season. He said last month: “It’s not something I think about, nor something I care about. These are rumours, nothing concrete.

“Of course, I want to finish the season at Sporting. I am enjoying my time there. I don't feel stressed about making a change in the future. We'll see when the time comes."
