Report: Man City rival moves into pole position in Viktor Gyokeres transfer race

Viktor Gyokeres is hot property at the moment after a stunning start to the 2024/25 season.

The Sweden international is currently the form player in Europe, having banged in 24 goals in just 21 appearances.

Manchester City were recently on the receiving end of his brilliance, as he scored a hat-trick in the Champions League game between the two teams.

Apparently, Gyokeres is a player on City’s transfer radar.

It was claimed earlier this week that Hugo Viana is pushing hard to sign Gyokeres ahead of Manchester United, who are of course now managed by former Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim.

However, Manchester City News spoke to GRV Media’s transfer expert Graeme Bailey, who made it clear that Manchester City’s stance on Gyokeres was that the club are not currently working on any deal for the forward.

Gyokeres’s form means he attracting significant interest right now though, with one of City’s Premier League rivals said to be leading the race.

According to Football Transfers, Newcastle United are actually the team who are currently in pole position to sign Gyokeres.

Newcastle currently have a Swedish superstar of their own in Alexander Isak. But there is a feeling he leave next summer, so Gyokeres would come in as his replacement in theory, as opposed to becoming his teammate.

Newcastle are said to have been locked in negotiations with agents over Gyokeres.

It’s stated that he’s very open to joining the Magpies, in a potential blow to City. He is said to appreciate their ambition ‘and recognises that he’s far more likely to get regular game time there’.

Indeed, it was claimed recently that Gyokeres would only join City over Manchester United if he wasn’t going to be back-up to Erling Haaland.

Gyokeres is said to be valued around £62 million.

As well as City, Newcastle and Manchester United, it’s thought Arsenal are also keen.

Gyokeres to Man City surely hinges on Erling Haaland

So it looks as though Newcastle could be set to land Gyokeres, and what a signing he would be for them.

City are not totally out of the running just yet, with the Viana factor likely meaning that some conversations are going to take place.

But realistically, Gyokeres to City is unlikely – and that is because of Erling Haaland.

Apperances – 71

Goals – 67

Assists – 19

Appearances – 71

Haaland is the best number nine in the world and will play every single game that he’s available for.

Gyokeres is now an unbelievable striker in his own right, and he is rightly not going to accept sitting on the bench at the next club he joins.

There’s the notion that City could move for Gyokeres and use him in a partnership with Haaland. But Guardiola hasn’t often used strike partnerships throughout his managerial career and it’s difficult to see him getting behind this potential move.

Indeed, Guardiola recently played down talk of City moving for Gyokeres, talking up Haaland instead.
