Barcelona to drop out from race for Tottenham target harbouring Premier League ambitions

Tottenham Hotspur have been subject to intensive links with a move for Nico Williams in the last summer transfer window; however, the Spaniard chose to stay with his current employers, i.e., Athletic Club, over a highly regarded move away.

The Spain international was the centre of the summer transfer window, given links with a probable move with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain. However, none of the aforementioned sides had what it took to pry away his signatures from his boyhood club.

Tottenham will be looking to sign Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams next summer.

He has been playing some good football in La Liga once again this season with a decent stat of a couple of goals complemented by three assists in 16 appearances across all competitions for Athletic Club, who are keen on extending his contract, per SPORT.

However, any potential contract extension will take Barcelona out of the race for his signatures, as the Camp Nou side is only looking to spend no more than €60 million for his services given their financial struggles, per PSG Talk.

Moreover, as Ornstein suggests, the stage is set for another summer of intense rumours surrounding Nico Williams, especially if his release clause doesn’t increase. The fact that the player is open to a switch to English football after initially waiting for Barcelona last summer will be a big boost for the top Premier League sides.

Tottenham are said to have shown interest in his signatures and could find themselves in the mix once again, especially if Ange Postecoglou‘s side qualifies for Champions League football in the upcoming campaign.

For Tottenham, if Levy is to secure Williams, it would be a significant coup; however, Spurs will have to act fast and decisively, given the Premier League rivals and European giants also preparing to enter the race for one of Spain’s brightest young talents.
