Newcastle United will be very interested in David Ornstein’s latest transfer update, as the Magpies firm up their transfer plans for 2025.
It has been reported that Newcastle’s January priority is to sign a right winger, with Toon officials feeling that is the position that can be improved the most.
That certainly feels like the case, as none of Eddie Howe’s current players have made that position their own this season.
No one is standing out, reaffirming Newcastle United’s need for reinforcements. Bryan Mbeumo is described as Newcastle’s dream signing, but he he will likely be too expensive. That could also be the case for Antoine Semenyo, who could cost in excess of £60million.

For a smaller fee than that, Newcastle United can sign a much better player. However, it is not as straightforward as that.
According to the Athletic, Athletic Club winger Nico Williams is now more open to signing for a club in the Premier League than he was in the summer.
David Ornstein writes that Williams’ release clause is worth around £46million, with a 2025 transfer seen as ‘probable’. He adds that the 22-year-old would prefer to move clubs in the summer rather than January, after a 2024 transfer to Barcelona collapsed during the previous transfer window.
Newcastle are long-term admirers of Nico Williams
With Williams coming round to the idea of playing in the Premier League rather than a dream move to Barcelona, an opportunity could emerge for Newcastle United.

The Spain international is a long-term target for the Magpies, with Newcastle first looking at Williams in January 2023. He was viewed as an alternative to Anthony Gordon, who ended up arriving from Everton.
But Newcastle’s interest in Williams continued, as his stock rose. He was one of the best players at Euro 2024, as Spain went the distance and won the entire thing. Williams even scored in the final, as Spain beat England 2-1 in Berlin.
The attacker would have been a perfect signing for Eddie Howe during the summer, but Newcastle knew they would not be able to meet Williams’ wage demands.
2025 transfer feels difficult for Newcastle United
Whether or not that will still be the case in 2025 remains to be seen, while Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle are continuing to monitor Williams’ situation.
Newcastle United also continue to endure PSR problems, with player sales seemingly more important than arrivals.
And with Newcastle struggling in their quest to qualify for the Champions League, it could be very difficult for Paul Mitchell to tempt Williams to Tyneside – even if his willingness to join a Premier League club has increased.
While Williams would be a transformative signing and is a long-term target for Newcastle United, it continues to be incredibly difficult to envision him ever arriving at St James’ Park.
If money was not an issue, Toon fans might be able to dream of signing a player like Williams, just like how they were able to land major names such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
However, PSR is Newcastle’s biggest enemy right now, while the pull of the PIF project feels like it has diminished.
