PSG offer Luis Enrique reassurance amid downturn in form

For the first time since being appointed Paris Saint-Germain manager in the summer of 2023, Luis Enrique is coming under pressure. Performances in Ligue 1 have remained largely consistent and, even despite a disappointing draw against FC Nantes over the weekend, PSG remain seven points clear of second-placed Olympique de Marseille.

However, it is Les Parisiens’ form in Europe that is cause for concern. Luis Enrique’s side have won just one of their first five games in the UEFA Champions League. It means that they are currently 25th and therefore on course for elimination. Of course, with three games remaining, there is time to reverse the trend and with matches against RB Salzburg and VfB Salzburg to come, they will be expected to do so.

Regardless, Luis Enrique’s position as PSG manager is not under threat, as president Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed when speaking to L’Équipe.

“I can’t believe what is being written [about Luis Enrique] and I even find it ridiculous, but we won’t let it affect our football at all […] we have a short, medium, and long-term strategy and I have full faith in the manager, in the players, and in all of our team,” said the PSG president.

The current dip therefore doesn’t seem to have damaged Luis Enrique’s job security. The Spaniard reportedly recently signed a contract extension with the reigning Ligue 1 champions, although this has not been officialised by the club.
