Ilkay Gundogan says one factor will play ‘a big role’ in Man City getting back on track

Manchester City have found themselves in uncharted territory in recent weeks.

More specifically, the Citizens have failed to win any of their seven previous matches across all competitions prior to City’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.

Heading into this big game, Pep Guardiola’s side find themselves in fifth place in the league table, 11 points behind the leaders Liverpool – who beat the champions 2-0 at Anfield last weekend.

This defeat then led to Jamie Carragher claiming City are in a “mini-crisis” and out of the Premier League title race due to the significant points gap between them and Arne Slot’s side.

With such a poor run of results to their name, a key figure in the City squad has outlined something that could be vital to get the team out of their recent slump.

Ilkay Gundogan pinpoint key factor to help Man City get out of slump

In a recent interview with the official Man City website ahead of the Forest clash, Ilkay Gundogan said this on how the Blues can turn their poor form around.

He said: “It is difficult to answer because we haven’t really had this in all of the years we have been together.

“Of course, we had games and periods where we dropped a few points in a row, and we had to overcome these difficulties. We have to stick together right now.

“It is not a question of quality at the end of the day. We have showed over the last few years that this team is full of quality players.

“I think the mind plays a big role, but we have to use that in terms of getting on the training pitch and transferring that into work, desire and determination to go again and make things better because it is the only way out of the situation.

“Once that positive energy is created, there is no doubt things are going to be better again.”

Phil Foden delivered encouraging message after Liverpool defeat

Gundogan isn’t the only City player to speak out about the club’s recent run of form, as Phil Foden shared a message after the Liverpool defeat in an effort to encourage the Manchester club’s supporters.

He said: “It’s been a difficult few weeks and of course, we’re not where we want to be. But, we’ll work together and keep fighting. We go again on Wednesday.”

With City having a track record of ending Premier League campaigns in a consistently winning fashion, several of which Gundogan has played a significant part in, everyone connected to the club will be hoping history will repeat itself once again this time around.

However, the Blues’ first main focus will be on ending 2024 as strongly as possible by picking up as many victories as possible throughout December, starting with their midweek league tie with Forest.
