An emotional 2024 saw an era come to an end as Jurgen Klopp departed Liverpool after nine years in charge of the club. His final season at the helm saw a final trophy added to the cabinet, as the Reds secured a record tenth League Cup by beating Chelsea at Wembley in February.

But while Klopp's teary goodbye is still fresh in the memory, the dawn of a new era at Anfield has been enjoyable to watch for supporters, not least because the new man in the dugout is already bringing out the best in some of his star players.

Arne Slot couldn’t have made a better start to life in England, leading the Reds at the top of the Premier League table, nine points clear of closest rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. Could it be Liverpool’s year once again in 2025?

But before the new year rolls in, we need readers to crown their top performer from 2024 as the Liverpool Fans’ Footballer of the Year campaign gets underway. Mohamed Salah is no stranger to the award having won all four votes since its launch in 2020, while the Egyptian also hoping to add to his two national titles, which you can vote for here.

Mohamed Salah

Nobody at Liverpool takes the Egyptian for granted. But there’s a sense the achievements of Salah are perhaps underestimated outside Merseyside, purely because his astonishing consistency has become, well, the accepted norm.

Now 32, Salah remains at the peak of his physical powers and has now become a playmaker as well as a goalscorer, the first player in Europe’s leading leagues to reach 10 goals and 10 assists this campaign. Not bad for a one-season wonder seven years ago. Now, about that new contract…

Virgil van Dijk

There’s a reason why his centre-back peers continue to regard Van Dijk as the main man. The Dutchman has adjusted to both his advancing years and assuming the Liverpool captaincy to once again be an integral part of a defence that is challenging for honours.

Still a player capable of making those around him better, any success in the first season under Arne Slot will perhaps depend on Van Dijk remaining fit.

Luis Diaz

It doesn’t take a huge leap of imagination to envisage Diaz having gone elsewhere in the summer, especially with Liverpool having almost bought Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. But the Colombian has been in superb form since the turn of the year, stepping up to the challenge of delivering greater numbers despite strong competition in the Liverpool forward line.

And when he started down the middle against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, he responded with a hat-trick. Not bad for a first-ever game in the position.

Caoimhin Kelleher

While other teams bleat about their injuries, hardly anyone has mentioned Liverpool have been without Alisson Becker, their first-choice goalkeeper and arguably the best in the world, for a large part of the calendar year. The reason for that has been the form of Kelleher, who has stepped out of the shadow of the Brazilian to become a recognised number one in his own right. Next summer will be interesting, though. Liverpool will have four international goalkeepers and they can’t all stay. They aren’t Chelsea.
