Sean Dyche can’t afford to gamble his Everton future and start Beto over Dominic Calvert-Lewin in their Premier League game against Wolves on Wednesday.

The two relegation battlers are currently separated by two points in the league and a win for either side could be essential as we get later into the season.

In their recent 4-0 defeat against Manchester United on 1 December, Dyche chose to start Beto due to the poor form that Calvert-Lewin has shown of late.

While the former Udinese man has bagged a couple of goals this season, it’s clear that he’s not up to the standards required and he just doesn’t fit into the way Everton play.

Reporting on the game, Joe Thomas shared his thoughts on Beto’s performance via X on 1 December and shared that Calvert-Lewin would have been a “better target man” for the Toffees.

“Pickford launched the long ball to an outnumbered Beto in the build-up to that goal,” he wrote. “If that is going to be the approach, hard to argue DCL would not be the better target man.”

Why Everton and Sean Dyche need to start Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Although the form of both strikers at Everton this season has left a lot to be desired, it feels like Calvert-Lewin is still the better option of the two.

While his form in the final third has been way off the pace this term, the movement he makes off the ball and the fact that he knows exactly how Dyche wants his strikers to play make it so he’s more involved in the game.

Beto, while a good poacher, isn’t quite cut out for the physicality of the Premier League and while the Englishman is in charge of the team, they’re never going to play with a style that suits his skill set.

Only time will tell what Dyche chooses to do in the game against Wolves on Wednesday evening but if he wants to try and save his job, Calvert-Lewin seems to be the best option.
