Andy Townsend was surprised by Jarrod Bowen’s decision to pass instead of shoot as West Ham lost 3-1 to Leicester City on Tuesday.

The Hammers’ captain was one of the biggest threats for Julen Lopetegui’s side all night, firing four shots at goal across the 90 minutes, but was denied on each occasion by goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Bowen finally had a clear-cut chance to fire a much-needed goal past the Foxes but chose instead to pass the ball across the box, with the opposition eventually clearing at the King Power Stadium on 3 December.

Speaking via Amazon Prime [3 December], Townsend said: “I was amazed that Jarrod Bowen didn’t take the shot. I thought he was in a brilliant position to hit that but he cuts it back very cleverly.

“James Justin and Connor Coady do so well. He just sticks a foot out and manages to get it away.”

Just like the rest of the squad, Bowen has not been able to hit the heights that many have come to expect of their current captain, even with six goal contributions in the Premier League this term.

The 27-year-old notched over 20 goal contributions in the league alone last season, boasting six goals and five assists in the campaign before that.

While he has plenty of time to recreate similar numbers, he has missed far too many chances already to escape some sort of criticism, especially as club captain.

Of course, with the failings of others around him, there is only so much Bowen can do to push his team forward, but he had plenty of chances to hit the back of the net at the King Power.

This moment is just one of his multiple chances that normally ended in frustration, mainly due to shot-stopper Hermansen in between the sticks.

In other West Ham news, Tim Steidten has created a succession plan amid “serious danger” for Lopetegui.
