Liverpool star cautions against ‘extra motivation’ vs Newcastle United

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold believes the team needs to perform at the maximum to beat “extra motivated” club Newcastle United. Liverpool have beaten Real Madrid and Manchester City in the past two games with the 2-0 scoreline, displaying their dominance.

However, things can change immediately in both the Premier League and the Champions League with no margin for any error. Maintaining winning consistency irrespective of the adversities is a key difference between a top team and the eventual title winner.

Liverpool have won 18 out of 20 games in all competitions this season under the new guidance of Arne Slot. The Dutch head coach has implemented subtle changes compared to how the Reds played under the legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

These changes have allowed the vastly unchanged senior squad from last season to dominate both the offensive and defensive phases. However, complacency remains their biggest enemy that they can control while uncontrollable factors continue to hinder their progress this season.

There are many occasions where the Reds struggled with poor officiating but their conviction overcame that uncontrollable factor so far. Liverpool needs to maintain their winning form with plenty of room for improvement still possible for the highly diverse squad.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Trent highlighted that every team including Newcastle have extra motivation to beat the current league leader, Liverpool. He said:

“People always talk about previous games and form going into games; I think in the Premier League that’s something that doesn’t really matter. Every game is incredibly difficult and I think teams will always have that extra motivation when they’re playing us. We’re sitting top of the league, we’re probably the best team in the league so far this season, so of course teams are going to have extra motivation.”

The Reds vice-captain demanded his team to produce their 100 per cent against the Magpies at the difficult St. James’ Park stadium. He added:

“They know that they need to be at 100 per cent to have a chance to beat us and we understand that. We need to be at our best and they’ll always have a point to prove. In these situations, teams that are able to get a result against us, it can transform their season and kick-start their season, so that will be motivation. For us, it’s just about churning out results and getting wins [at] home or away – it doesn’t really matter to us. Every game we target getting three points.”
