The Manchester City midfielder was not named in the 20-man matchday squad.

Phil Foden was a shock omission from the Manchester City squad on Wednesday for the midweek Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest.

The 24-year-old has endured a tough start to the season and is yet to score a league goal so far this term, and was forced to sit out the midweek game to bronchitis. It’s not clear if the illness will keep him out of this weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere, Pep Guardiola made four changes to his team on Wednesday night, with Josko Gvardiol, Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish coming in to replace Kyle Walker, Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes and Foden.

Stefan Ortega continues in nets with Ederson remaining on the bench for the second game in a row. The keeper made several good saves at Anfield on Sunday but gave away the late penalty against Liverpool.

In defence, Manuel Akanji looks set to play at right-back, a position he has played in the past, with Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake at centre-back and then Gvardiol at left-back. The Croat was dropped against Liverpool after making four defensive errors over the previous two games.

The return of De Bruyne is certainly the biggest news from the team sheet, with the Belgian starting for the first time since 18 September due to a long-lasting pelvis issue. De Bruyne has come off the bench in the last five matches, with Guardiola insisting ahead of the Forest game that the lack of starts is not down to any sort of falling out.

De Bruyne is joined in midfield by Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan.

In the attacking areas, Grealish and Doku has been selected, in a more offensive XI compared to Sunday’s team at Anfield. Erling Haaland will hope to end a lean spell in front of goal against and has scored five in four previous appearances against Forest.

City starting XI: Ortega, Akanji, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol, Gundogan, De Bruyne (C), Bernardo, Doku, Grealish, Haaland. Substitues: Ederson, Carson, Walker, Savinho, Nunes, Wright, O’Reilly, Lewis, McAtee.
