The reason Mykhailo Mudryk is missing from the Chelsea squad vs Southampton - journalist

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca made seven changes to his side for Wednesday night’s game away at Southampton, but Mykhailo Mudryk was completely absent from the matchday squad.

Chelsea face Southampton this evening in a Premier League match at St Mary’s.

Interestingly, the Blues have made seven changes to the team that won 3-0 at home to Aston Villa in the league on Sunday. Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer are the quartet to keep their starting positions.

Simon Jordan feels Chelsea may be in a title race due to their progress this season. If that’s the case, they should be winning convincingly away at bottom of the table Southampton.

Mykhailo Mudryk is absent for Chelsea

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, 23, was an unused substitute a few days ago in the Villa win. Blues supporters may be wondering why he’s completely absent tonight at St Mary’s, though.

Journalist Kieran Gill has reported via X that Chelsea’s Mudryk is absent from the matchday squad against Southampton because of illness.

Mudryk has scored three goals and created 15 assists across all competitions so far this season. However, he’s only started one Premier League match under Maresca.

There’s transfer rumours that the Ukraine international may end up leaving Stamford Bridge, but there’s no chance Mudryk leaves Chelsea in January.

Mykhailo Mudryk has to remain patient

Maresca’s team selection versus Southampton dispels the myth that he’s got an A-team for the league and B-team for the cup competitions. During this extremely busy December schedule, there may be plenty of opportunities for players in the squad to impress.

Let’s hope that Mudryk’s illness isn’t severe and he can be back available for Sunday’s league trip to Tottenham.

Jason Cundy says Chelsea attacker Mudryk must improve defensively if he wants to get into the team’s best XI. He does have plenty of competition for places in the wide areas, though.
