Ashley Young has become the oldest player in Premier League history to score from a free-kick after putting Everton ahead against Wolves.

The veteran winger scored the opener for the Toffees from a set piece and in doing so has created a slice of history. Young has enjoyed a well-travelled career in England's top flight and celebrated his 39th birthday several months ago.

His strike at Goodison Park on Wednesday night comes with Young aged 39 and 148 days. It means he is now fourth on the all-time list when it comes to goal scorers full stop. Ryan Giggs had been fourth on the list but has now been relegated to fifth by Young - a former team-mate of his.

Despite his age Young has continued to be a regular for Everton, after joining them from Aston Villa. He could well have the all-time record in his sights should he choose to play on for at least another season.

The next player in his sights will be Thiago Silva, who recently left Chelsea. He was another player who continued to defy his age and was 39 years and 198 days when he scored for the Blues against Sheffield United in April of this year.

Dean Windass is also ahead of Young but Teddy Sheringham has been the oldest Premier League scorer for almost two decades. The top flight winner was at West Ham when he set the record, notching against Portsmouth back in 2006. When he did so he was 40 years and 268 days - making him the only Premier League scorer beyond his 40th birthday.

Young has shown no desire to retire and looks poised to play against his son in the FA Cup. Tyler is 18 but has just broken through at Peterborough with the League One outfit drawn to play the Toffees in January in the third round of the competition.

The Everton player has opened up on his decision to remain playing and will stay devoted to the game until his body makes it obvious that he can't play on, but Young claims he's feeling incredible fit.

“I'm just taking every season as it comes until my body tells me that I can't do it anymore. Then I think that's the day when I'll hang up my boots. But it could be a few years yet for me I'm still feeling as fit as I have done in years.”
