Despite the convincing 3-0 win on Wednesday, the post-match mood wasn’t all from the Manchester City camp.
Manuel Akanji was replaced at the break by Kyle Walker before Nathan Ake was forced off in the latter stages. The Dutchman appeared to hold his hamstring after coming off worse in a challenge for the ball, with Ake immediately indicating he couldn’t continue.
It meant that, despite the convincing win on Wednesday night, Pep Guardiola was in a surprisingly downbeat mood after the game. “Nathan doesn’t look good. We see tomorrow. Manu is making the last two months struggle a lot. I thank them for playing and for playing in positions that is not natural. We will see what will happen,” he explained.
“We are sad for Nathan. We will see. With Manu, maybe not Selhurst Park [on Saturday]. We will see. I don’t know In Turin [next week] or the next games. Nathan I think will be longer.”
Guardiola was also asked if Phil Foden will be available against Crystal Palace at the weekend after he missed the Forest game through illness. “Phil had bronchitis so when he has no fever he will be ready,” he replied.
Kevin De Bruyne was the star of the show against Forest, with a goal and assist in his first start since September. He also appeared to be in discomfort after the game but any possible knock doesn’t seem to be serious.
“We'll see how he recovers after a long time injured but we will see how he feels in three days,” said Guardiola. “I’m so happy for him. Last season was many months injured and this season as well. He fought a lot and he prepared himself. He is back to his physicality.
The minutes against Feyenoord were not good and that’s why I decided not to play at Anfield for their rhythm. The minutes he played in Anfield was really good and today he played 75 fantastic minutes.”
On the game, the Catalan added: “We need it. The club, the players, everyone needed to win but it is just one game and in three days we are at Selhurst Park. Always it has been difficult.
