Newcastle United and Liverpool played out another classic.
Indeed, a huge Premier League match under the lights at St James’ Park ended 3-3 on a night where Newcastle went toe-to-toe with the table toppers.
Eddie Howe’s side looked like the outfit who qualified for the Champions League during the 2022/23 campaign, pressing a Liverpool team who have arguably been the best in Europe this season all over the park.
It was quite the response to the loss at home to West Ham and the laboured draw away at Crystal Palace. While consistency remains an issue, there can be little doubt that Newcastle are a force to be reckoned with when at their very best.
There were brilliant performances throughout the team. Bruno Guimaraes provided two assists, while Sandro Tonali also shined.
Alexander Isak, meanwhile, proved fantastic all evening and opened the scoring with an absolute thunderbolt.
Still, it was another Newcastle star who seemingly had Liverpool boss Arne Slot lost for words…

Arne Slot reacts to late Fabian Schar goal in Newcastle 3-3 Liverpool
Reflecting on the draw, Slot admitted it was a surprise to see Fabian Schar score late on.

The defender does have a goal in him but the manner of it seemingly came from nowhere. Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher misjudged the flight of a Guimaraes free-kick and the ball found its way over to the Swiss over at the back post.
Still, Schar had an awful lot to do amid some testing conditions after some heavy rain on Tyneside. Stretching to meet the cross from a tight angle on what looked to be his weaker foot, it was a brilliant finish from the 32-year-old.
Speaking after the game to Amazon Prime, Slot said: “It was unbelievable how the defender, with his wrong leg, could score that goal.”
Fabian Schar didn’t even mean to score against Liverpool
Slot wasn’t the only one surprised the goal! Schar himself even admitted he was trying to keep the ball in play more than anything, rather than attempting to score.
It was perhaps somewhat fortunate but surely few would argue against Newcastle deserving at least a point.
