‘Improved so much’: Stephen Warnock really impressed by ‘excellent’ Chelsea player in 5-1 win over Southampton

Chelsea made it four wins in a row after the international break in all competitions in dominant style against Southampton at St. Mary’s.

A 5-1 win doesn’t begin to tell the story of how many goals they could have scored last night, although the most enjoyable thing for Enzo Maresca will be the players who helped his side breeze over the line.

The manager took a risk in making seven changes to the starting side who had beaten Aston Villa at the weekend, although the likes of Joao Felix proved the decision was spot on.

The boss made sure a number of his most important players remained in the starting side, with Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez again contributing to goals.

Stephen Warnock wowed by Marc Cucurella in Chelsea’s win over Southampton

Another who stayed in the side was Marc Cucurella, who had impressed greatly at Stamford Bridge at the weekend on the left of defence.

He remained there today, and was assured as ever with the defensive side of his game, whilst also providing a threat going forwards.

Commentator Stephen Warnock was wowed by the performance of Cucurella at the back, saying he believes he has improved greatly in this Chelsea side.

He said on Amazon Prime: “I’ve been really impressed by him, he’s improved so much. Often moves into that midfield position, but what’s really improved has been his 1v1 defending.”

Cucurella a guaranteed starter at Chelsea

After being on the chopping block just over a year ago at Stamford Bridge, it has been a remarkable rise in form for Cucurella in a Chelsea shirt.

He has certainly been kept on his toes this season by the performances of Renato Veiga since he joined in the summer, with him deputising very comfortably in the Conference League this season.

It is hard to pick a guaranteed starter in the Chelsea side at the moment, however it feels like Cucurella is one of those.
