Ruben Amorim looks set to be forced to delay his move for Viktor Gyokeres

Manchester United have made their priorities for the January transfer window clear.

With manager Ruben Amorim a recent arrival in the dugout, United are expected to be one of the busier clubs in January. Top of the list is a striker, though there are several positions that Amorim will want to improve on.

If they do pursue a new forward, then Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres will be very high up the list. Amorim worked closely with Gyokeres at Sporting, with the duo winning the Portuguese title together last season.

But United appear to be likely to be forced to wait before being able to make a move for the Swede. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Manchester United transfer news.

Amorim forced to wait for Gyokeres

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim looks set to be forced to wait for top target Viktor Gyokeres. The striker has quickly risen up Amorim's list of potential signings in the January transfer window.

According to A Bola, United are one of the 'most interested' clubs in the 26-year-old. But with his contract not expiring until 2028, Sporting are in a strong negotiating position.

It is said that the Portuguese giants are standing firm on the £83m fee it will take to buy him in January. They would be willing to accept a lower fee in the summer, potentially forcing United to pause their pursuit.

United loanee handed big hint on future

Joe Hugill looks set to stay at Wigan beyond the January window

United academy star Joe Hugill has been told he can expect to remain at Wigan beyond the January window. The striker has made only 12 appearances for the Latics this season but boss Shaun Maloney has insisted he remains a key part of his plans.

"The games are coming thick and fast, and I was very pleased with what I saw from those three [Hugill, Calvin Ramsay, Michael Olakigbe] in particular. It was a really difficult game to play in, the conditions at the training ground were very poor, and they were really good." he said.

"I'm happy with that, because there's nothing I can replicate in training in terms of preparation. I need them to play games, because the reality is they will all play at some point over the next couple of weeks. They need to be match ready and only playing in games will ensure they are."

United priority becomes clear

United's priority in the transfer market is becoming clearer, after they put their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface on the backburner. Boniface helped to fire Leverkusen to a domestic double last season, as they became the first team to ever go a Bundesliga season unbeaten.

His form in front of goal drew the attention of United, among other suitors. But according to Sky Germany, United have not held any talks over the 23-year-old, though are monitoring his situation.

Instead, it is said their interest in Sporting star Gyokeres is 'more concrete'. Boniface looks set to remain at Leverkusen, with Xabi Alonso's side working to hand him a new contract that would make him one of the club's top earners.
