Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim agreed with Roberto Martinez's assessment of their defeat against Arsenal on Wednesday. The Portugal coach pointed out that set pieces were the main difference between the two sides in their Premier League clash at the Emirates.
The Red Devils held the Gunners to a 0-0 scoreline in the first half. However, the north London side scored two goals from two corners to win the game 2-0. Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 54th minute before William Saliba added another in the 73rd minute.
After the game, Roberto Martinez likened Mikel Arteta's side to Toni Pulis' Stoke City, who were excellent at set pieces back in the day. Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim agreed with Martinez's assessment, saying (via Utd District):
“The set-pieces changed everything. Two set-pieces. We have to understand they have years of doing that. Arsenal can change games like that.
“We tried to defend them with the space of two days to train but it’s hard for every team to defend Arsenal’s set-pieces.”
The Gunners have now scored 22 goals from set pieces since the start of last season (via Squawka).
What Roberto Martinez said about Arsenal's set piece strategy after win over Manchester United
The Gunners have developed their set-piece strategy under Mikel Arteta to great effect since the start of last season. This has helped them win some crucial games, including the North London Derby and the Manchester United clash this season.
After Arsenal beat the Red Devils on Wednesday, Roberto Martinez shared his thoughts on their set-piece strategy, saying on Prime Video (via Utd District):
“We were talking about how tight the game was but that delivery makes every strategy that you work on in the set play work. We all suffered Stoke, and I think it is a great credit to remember Tony Pulis and the work that he did with the throw-ins. When teams do something exceptionally well, you have to try to find a different way to defend it.”
With the win, Arsenal moved to third in the table, level on points with second-placed Chelsea but behind on goal difference. They are seven points behind leaders Liverpool, who drew 3-3 at Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are 11th in the table, sitting seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
