It was a disappointing outing for the reigning champions, as Kylian Mbappe notably missed another penalty.
However, the biggest upset came when star midfielder Federco Valverde made an individual error in the second half, which eventually led to Athletic Club’s winner.

Writing to his fans and teammates, the midfielder added, “I know it’s football and things can happen, but they’re not strangers to me and I didn’t want to stop expressing myself for the mistake I made.”
“There is still a long way to go, many competitions and I am sure that there will be many joys,” the midfielder concluded.
Real Madrid will hope Valverde can pick himself up and help the team avoid another setback as Los Blancos take on Girona this weekend.
The Spanish giants cannot afford to drop points against the Catalans if they are to put pressure on Barcelona at the top of the table.
