'Potential issue': Eddie Howe admits the one Liverpool substitute who he was very concerned about coming on

Liverpool dropped points in the Premier League for the first time in weeks on Wednesday night during their trip to Newcastle United.

Arne Slot’s side have set the pace domestically and in the Champions League this season as they still hold a sizeable cushion on second.

However, Liverpool’s lead at the top was shortened on Wednesday night following their draw on Tyneside with results elsewhere going against them.

Pep Guardiola was shocked by Liverpool fans on the weekend as they jokingly sang ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’.

But the travelling fans on Wednesday night were left dwelling over a late Caoimhin Kelleher mistake which saw them drop two points against the Toon.

Eddie Howe wowed by Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold

Going into the game, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation remained one of the big talking points around Anfield.

Gary Neville praised Alexander-Arnold against Manchester City on the weekend for a pass he made, and he was able to claim back his spot in the starting XI after the Real Madrid win.

The right-back started the game on the bench with Howe left very much aware of the issues he could cause when he came on.

“You sort of know the quality they have from the bench when they make the changes,” Howe told Amazon Prime after the game.

“When Trent comes on with his creativity, we were going to have a potential issue. And that’s when our mental quality came to the fore.”

BBC Sport’s Pat Nevin was baffled by Alexander-Arnold starting from the bench up in the north east before coming on with 23 minutes to go.
