Disasi: It’s something we work a lot on

Axel Disasi got an entertaining game at St Mary’s up and running with his first league goal of the season, and afterwards the defender reflected on another good night’s work and his contribution to it.

The Blues beat Southampton 5-1 on Wednesday evening to make it three league wins on the spin since the last international break, with the margin of victory moving us up to second place in the table.

Despite the final outcome, it was not plain sailing throughout at St Mary’s, a factor Disasi acknowledged in his post-match assessment.

‘It was a tough game,’ said the 26-year-old.

‘Even if they are low in the league, they have a lot of quality with the ball. They build up very well. We were expecting that.

‘It was important for us to start strong, which we did with the first goal. Even if they scored, we kept the game in control, and in the end it was a good result for us.

‘We continue our run and we just have to keep focused on us and our game. We can do things better, but game after game we are seeing improvement from the team.’

Disasi opened the scoring with his fifth Blues goal and his first in the league since March, meeting Enzo Fernandez’s near-post corner.

‘It’s something we work a lot on,’ he explained.

‘We know if we put the ball on the first post, they leave a lot of space, so Enzo put a great ball in and I just had to finish.’

The 26-year-old, who lined up alongside Tosin Adarabioyo in the heart of defence, also had words of praise for Jadon Sancho, who opened his Chelsea account with our fifth and final goal of the night.

‘It’s something he was waiting for, and we are all happy for him because since he joined us he has done a great job.

‘He’s a great guy with a great personality so I’m happy for him.’
