BBC journalist Steve Hermon called Wolves’ defending ‘shambolic’ as Everton romped to a 4-0 win at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

The Toffees earned a crucial win thanks to goals from Ashley Young, Orel Mangala and a pair of Craig Dawson own goals (4 December).

Sean Dyche’s men had another disallowed by VAR for offside, but Hermon was quick to point out just how poor the visitors were defensively.

He wrote on X: “[Wolves] have actually had a couple of decent chances from Strand-Larsen but the defending is shambolic. A reminder that Everton hadn’t scored since October before tonight.”

Win against Wolves a massive boost for Everton

The Toffees looked like a much stronger side against Wolves and came back in strong form after their thrashing at the hands of Manchester United at the weekend.

However, while they certainly looked good, their opponents also put in a poor display themselves and given the Blues had scored only 10 goals all season coming into this game, it speaks volumes about the standard of their opposition.

Two own goals from Dawson to extend the Toffees’ lead only emphasised the weaknesses in the Wolves defence and Everton came away from this game with an important three points to extend the distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

There is still plenty of work for Dyche to do to turn his side around but this performance should serve as reassurance that they are a better side than those sides below them in the Premier League which would be enough to save them this term.
