Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has urged Manchester City to move quickly in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who is attracting attention from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona.

The 22-year-old winger shone at Euro 2024, playing a pivotal role in Spain’s triumph and scoring the opening goal in their 2-1 victory over England in the final. His performances have made him one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe.

Speaking atAS’ awards ceremony in Madrid on Monday evening, Rodri, who shared the stage with Williams via video link, made his admiration for his Spain teammate clear. When asked if he would “take Williams to City tomorrow,” the midfielder responded enthusiastically:“Yes, yes. Right now, if I was taking him, I would also be taking him to teach him a little bit about the cold in England, although it’s similar to Bilbao. But yes, I would take him with me without a doubt.”

Rodri’s endorsement underscores Williams’ growing reputation, and the City star believes the winger has the potential to thrive in England’s top flight.

Williams’ current contract with Athletic Bilbao includes a €58 million (£48.1m) release clause, which is relatively modest in today’s market. However, his reported €200,000-a-week (£166,000) salary demands were a stumbling block for several clubs during the summer transfer window.

While Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Barcelona were all linked with the player, no deal materialized. Despite the intense interest, Williams reaffirmed his commitment to Bilbao at the start of the season.

In September, Williams addressed speculation about his future, saying: “It’s always flattering to know that big teams have you on their agenda. But I’ve always been clear that I wanted to be here. Athletic is a different feeling that you don’t get at other clubs. I’m really looking forward to doing things well at this club.

“There were approaches from many clubs. My heart is with Athletic. I have a contract here, but who knows what will happen in the future. I wanted to stay here because playing in Europe with Athletic was what I was most excited about.”
