Newcastle United raised hope for what remains of the season on Wednesday night.
While Newcastle did not leave St James’ Park with a first three points since the return from the international break, Eddie Howe’s side looked like something approaching their very best in the 3-3 draw against Liverpool.
The goals returned as Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar found the back of the net. Gordon and Jacob Murphy may well have added to the tally too but some wayward finishing let them down.
Though it’s true that Liverpool wasted some good chances themselves mainly through Darwin Nunez, it would be difficult to argue against Newcastle at least deserving a point on the night.
Not all too many of Howe’s biggest players have shown up consistently enough this season. The challenge to do so again of course still remains but there were certainly signs of life.
It was also promising to see Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali operate well in midfield together. Much has been made about their partnership (or lack thereof) but they were brilliant.

Tonali delighted fans on social media with his display, while Guimaraes recorded two assists.

In response, Guimaraes responded: “Te amo.”
In English, of course, that means: “I love you.”
Bruno Guimaraes has already sent a message to Eddie Howe about his position at Newcastle
It would be silly to get too excited on the basis of one game.
However, it would be equally as foolish to suggest the pair absolutely cannot work together. It may not have always convinced thus far but that’s not to say there’s not a balance to be struck somehow.
Guimaraes, after all, has already made it clear that he’s willing to play anywhere in midfield. That kind of versatility has to help.
