Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s football has seen significant progress, and the fans are celebrating various aspects of the team’s performance.
One area that deserves more attention is their impressive defensive record from set pieces. After 21 games, Barcelona have not conceded a goal from every single corner they have faced.
Despite having conceded 98 corners this season, no opponent has been able to score from these situations, whether it’s goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen or Inaki Pena in goal.
A look at the statistics
Real Madrid and Monaco have tested Barcelona the most from corners, each with 10 attempts, followed closely by Alaves, who had 11. Yet, Barcelona’s defence has remained resolute, denying every attempt.
Amidst all this, Inigo Martinez has been a standout performer in aerial duels, winning nearly every header that comes his way.

Furthermore, Robert Lewandowski’s presence at the near post has been invaluable, helping to clear any threats that come from that area.
Given that Barcelona’s squad is not particularly tall, their ability to defend set pieces is an impressive feat. It’s a testament to the hard work put into refining their defensive strategies, particularly with the offside line being expertly maintained.
There is more to it
But it does not stop there—Barcelona have also been excellent at limiting fouls, which is another reason for their strong start to the season. The only goals they have conceded from set pieces have been penalties, which is another positive sign.
Looking at last season, Barcelona were not as dominant in defending set pieces, allowing two goals from corners and two from free kicks. This season, however, their improvement is clear.
While defending set pieces may not traditionally be a core part of Barcelona’s style, excelling in this area contributes significantly to their overall success, securing crucial points, and victories, and potentially qualifying for bigger competitions in the future.
