'Tough': Alan Shearer names who he thinks are the favourites for the Premier League title

Following their 2-0 win over Manchester United, both Arsenal and Manchester City gained points on Liverpool who failed to win at Newcastle United.

Despite Mohamed Salah’s brilliance, Liverpool were pegged back by Newcastle late on thanks to a rare piece of misjudgement by Caoimhin Kelleher which Arsenal took full advantage of.

Arsenal dominated United from corners, something Ruben Amorim confessed that his side needed to learn from.

Nicolas Jover’s set-piece prowess is nothing new in north London, and yet opposition sides are still unable to stop Arsenal, which could be a key factor in the title-race.

Liverpool are still seven points ahead of the Gunners, but Mikel Arteta’s side now seem a lot more confident.

Alan Shearer thinks Arsenal will be Liverpool’s biggest challenger

That being said, Alan Shearer shared his updated thoughts on the Premier League title race whilst covering Wednesday’s action for Amazon Prime.

Shearer confessed that Liverpool were still favourites after their strong start, but admitted that Arne Slot’s side will have to answer some questions internally with Arsenal upping the pressure.

He said: “Liverpool are favourites now for the Premier League title after their start to the season.

“It’s not all going to be perfection for them though. They will have to answer some questions, like they did at Newcastle tonight.

“Arsenal are the closest to them and they are the ones that are going to challenge them.

“I don’t see Manchester City coming back from where they are, even though they are back to winning ways. They’ve left themselves with a lot to do.

“It’s going to be tough for Arsenal though, because they will have to be close to perfect.”

Chris Sutton was wrong about Arsenal’s weakness

Recently, Chris Sutton thought Liverpool had an advantage over Arsenal in terms of winning the Premier League.

Sutton pointed to Liverpool’s superior squad depth during a period in which Conor Bradley and Kelleher were stepping up big.

However, it was Arsenal’s squad players who impressed during their 2-0 win over United.

Jakub Kiwior sent a statement to Arteta, a centre-back who the club can’t afford to sell in January.

And whilst Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez were largely indifferent at St James’ Park, Arsenal’s stand-in defenders helped secure three vital points at the Emirates.
