Kylian Mbappé’s move to Real Madrid hasn’t gone as smoothly as many anticipated following his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
The 25-year-old, whose contract runs until 2029, has had a challenging start in Madrid. His difficulties were evident during Real Madrid’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
With Vinicius unavailable last Wednesday, Mbappé had an opportunity to excel in his preferred role. However, the night proved disappointing for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner.
Mbappé scored over the weekend against Getafe, but he’s still struggling to deliver in crucial moments. That progress took a hit on Wednesday when he missed a penalty in the 68th minute during Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Athletic Club.

With the winger continuing to struggle, French journalist Stéphane Guy is coming todefense of Mbappé and believes that Real Madridhave a much bigger problem than the slow start that the player is having this 2024-25 season.
“Personally, I think wereally need to watch Real Madrid’s matches and ask ourselves: Is Mbappé a problem in a team that functions well, or is he just another problem for Real?” Guy said onL’ÉQUIPE du soir.
“Right now, he’s just another problem for Real. He hasn’t done much in these games to make us think we’ve seen the best of Mbappé. I was focused on him throughout the first half—his runs, his lack of generosity. That stands out, but this Real Madrid team is pretty disappointing.”
Stéphane Guy " Ce Real Madrid là est consternant."

Eventually, the argument about adaptation will no longer hold, and people will start asking if Mbappé’s dream transfer could turn into a nightmare.
