As Liverpool let points slip at Newcastle United, rivals Arsenal capitalised with victory over Manchester United. Declan Rice was informed of the good news for his side, though the Gunners midfielder quickly shut down the Premier League title race talk.

This midweek, Liverpool were presented with the challenging visit to St. James' Park. Second-half heroics to grab two goals and one assist by Mohamed Salah put the away team on track for another win, though Fabian Schar dashed hopes with an equaliser minutes before time was called.

Prior to kick-off the Reds had amassed a nine-point advantage over second-place Arsenal. Now Liverpool's tally for the season is 35 whilst Mikel Arteta's team beating Man United at the Emirates Stadium tonight moves them onto 28 points - seven behind.

"Yeah, it's good," said Rice when talking to Amazon Prime Video Sport regarding the gap shortening. However, he argued: "Look, people get carried away with the title talk.

"I was involved in my first one last year and you just need to be in and around it by February time. It's too early to be calling what's going, Liverpool dropped points - what are they, still 10 above? Nine?

"Oh, seven, so it's closer but it's still a long way to go. Keep believing in ourselves and see what happens."

Liverpool and their London rivals play another nine league fixtures before they reach the second month of 2025, plus have duties in other competitions, so Rice is correct in that it is going to be extremely challenging to maintain a title challenge for that long.

Also speaking after their match, Arsenal defender William Saliba commented: "I just want to win the Premier League. Chelsea have a good start of the season, they have a good team. City are not so good now but we know they will come back and Liverpool, they are flying. Now we have to keep winning because a lot of teams are good, we have to be ready."
