An enthralling game between Newcastle United and Liverpool was not without controversy.
The two sides played out a Premier League classic at St James’ Park, and Newcastle United will feel they deserved to beat Liverpool.
The Magpies’ performance certainly warranted all three points, but Eddie Howe’s side only walked away with one.
It was not a perfect display from Newcastle United. There were defensive errors in the second half, with two of Liverpool’s goals coming from the Magpies giving the ball away cheaply.
However, Newcastle can certainly feel aggrieved when it comes to a couple of major decisions that did not go their way.

Martin Keown thinks Liverpool player got ‘lucky’ against Newcastle
That is the view of BBC Match of the Day pundit Martin Keown, who has spoken about the Alexander Isak penalty appeal that was turned down during Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool. The 25-year-old was knocked over in the box by Jarrell Quansah when the score was level at 2-2, but was not awarded a penalty.
“I do feel that he’s fishing a bit, the defender,” he said.
“He dives in. I’m going to go with ref because that’s what we want to do in the game, but this looks like a penalty to me. I’m not certain he gets a touch on that.

“He’s lucky. He gets away with it.”
There was then even more Toon fury at full-time, as the referee ended the game when Newcastle United were on the counterattack. The five minutes of stoppage time were up, but it was obvious that more time should have been added on due to the delays during those five minutes.
On the full-time whistle incident, Keown said: “I thought he might have allowed the game to finish the action. It could have gone to either team, that was the point, the game was incredible.”
Three major decisions went against Newcastle during Liverpool draw
The major decisions went against Newcastle United.
For the penalty appeal, Quansah may get the slightest touch on the ball, but he definitely takes out Isak. As Keown says, he is attracted to the ball and dives in, and certainly does not win it cleanly.
If the referee gave it on the pitch, there is no way it would have been overturned.
As for the full-time whistle incident, St James’ Park was rightly furious. You could feel the anger from the fans, and rightly so. Andy Madley had to let play carry on – it was a minimum of five minute, while there were plenty of stoppages during that time.
As the game came to an end, Newcastle fans chanted: “Who’s the Scouser in the blue?!”
But they were not the only contentious decisions that went against Newcastle.
Virgil van Dijk’s shoulder to the face of Anthony Gordon was disgraceful. It was clearly intentional, and the fact that VAR did not intervene was ridiculous.
