Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has promised to give Luke Shaw as long as he needs to return to full fitness after his latest injury setback.
The Englishman admitted he is going through his 'toughest period' this week after confirming that he had suffered another injury, having only just returned to fitness. Shaw came off the bench in each of Amorim's first three matches in charge following a nine-month absence from the first team.
But Shaw could now be facing another lengthy lay-off, which will hurt his chances of impressing his new boss. However, Amorim, who suffered his first defeat as Red Devils manager on Wednesday night, pledged to give the 29-year-old as much time as he needs to recover.
And he praised the left-back for the work he had already put in to ensure that he could feature under the Portuguese.
'What I can say since I arrived, I see him in the medical department working a lot in the gym,' said Amorim. 'Working a lot on the pitch, we control the load during the games, during the trainings, he was losing weight, so he was doing everything.
'If he continues to do that behaviour, he’s a top, top player and we need him. No matter how long he will need, I will be with him, we will help him to return, not just Manchester United but your national team needs a guy like Luke Shaw, so we are here to help him.'

Luke Shaw could be set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury setback
Manchester United suffered their fifth defeat of the season and fell to 11th in the table after losing at Arsenal
On Tuesday Shaw took to social media to confirm his latest injury, writing: 'Hi guys, it’s hurting a lot having to write this as I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forward, but unfortunately I’ve had a small setback.
'I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period. I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.
'I understand there is gunna be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time. But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.
'Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn’t go unnoticed and I really do appreciate it.'
Amorim did not put a timeframe on the full-back's return to first-team duties.
The United boss is smarting from his defeat in the Red Devils dugout, indeed, their 2-0 loss to Arsenal was the 39-year-old first defeat this season, having previously led a dominant Sporting side before his move to Old Trafford last month.
The result saw the side lose ground in the hunt for a top-four place and leaves them 11th in the standings with 19 points from their first 14 matches. United welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford on Saturday before travelling to Czechia to take on Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.
