Gary Lineker has named Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka as the leading contenders to take over the England captaincy when Harry Kane steps aside.
Kane, who has been England captain since 2018, has led the team to back-to-back European Championship finals and remains a prolific scorer for Bayern Munich, netting 64 goals in as many games since leaving Tottenham. However, his recent performances for England, including a mixed showing at Euro 2024 despite being the joint-top scorer, have sparked debates about his long-term role.
Former England midfielder Paul Scholes recently described Kane’s situation as the “beginning of the end,” while Lineker speculated about the physical toll on the 31-year-old. Speaking about Kane’s longevity, Lineker said: “Part of [looking to] the future in my mind was what England do, what does Harry Kane do? He was not himself in this tournament.

“He’s in his 30s now. When I was 30, 31, my legs started to go. I retired from international football at 32. Maybe he was just tired or carrying something that affected him, but I wonder.”

Despite these concerns, Kane’s chances of leading England into the 2026 World Cup may be bolstered by his relationship with Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.

Looking ahead, Lineker highlighted Bellingham, Rice, and Saka as standout candidates for the armband. The 21-year-old Real Madrid star has already established himself as a leader within the England squad. With a Champions League title to his name, Bellingham’s maturity and influence make him a strong contender despite his youth.
A natural leader, Rice captained West Ham in his final season and has shown his ability to take charge on the pitch for both Arsenal and England.
At 23, Saka has already captained Arsenal in Martin Ødegaard’s absence. Praised for his attitude, skill, and ability to deliver in crucial moments, Saka is seen by many, including Premier League legend Alan Shearer, as a future England captain.
Shearer echoed Lineker’s sentiments, describing Saka as “incredible” and “sensational.” He told Betfair: “It wouldn’t surprise me to see Saka as a future England captain. Because of his attitude, ability, and the way everyone looks up to him, he has all the attributes to be an England captain.”
