Alan Shearer has given a Premier League title verdict on Liverpool

Alan Shearer has explained why Liverpool remain the frontrunners to win the Premier League title despite dropping points against Newcastle. The Reds were held to a 3-3 draw with the Magpies at St James' Park on Wednesday night.

Curtis Jones scored Liverpool's first goal, with Mohamed Salah adding a brace on the Reds' trip to Tyneside. However, it was not enough to secure the three points, with Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar all scoring for the home side.

The draw means Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table has fallen to seven points after Arsenal's win over Manchester United. The Reds are also nine points ahead of Manchester City after they ended a six-game run without a win with a victory over Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool still have 24 fixtures left to play in the top flight this season, and Shearer has explained why the Reds remain the favourites to win the title. The former Newcastle striker did explain, though, that Slot's team would not find it easy on their way to the finish line despite the points advantage in their favour.

"Obviously, Liverpool are favourites and rightly so because of the start that they've had to the season," Shearer told Amazon Prime Video after watching Arsenal beat Man United. "But it is not going to be all perfection for them, they're gonna have to answer some questions - they did tonight at Newcastle.

"But I think Arsenal are closest to them, they're the ones that are going to challenge them and I don't see [Manchester] City coming back from where they are at this moment in time.

"I know they've got a decent result and they're back to winning ways, but I think they've given themselves too much to do. I do see that Arsenal can challenge Liverpool but it'll be tough, they're going to have to be near on perfect, Arsenal."

Liverpool return to Premier League action this weekend with the Merseyside Derby clash against Everton at Goodison Park. Arsenal, meanwhile, travel to face Fulham, while Man City face an away trip to Crystal Palace.
