'Unable to cope': O'Neil drops embarrassing verdict after Wolves' sorry 4-0 defeat to Everton

Gary O’Neil is now under extreme pressure after Wolves crashed to a 4-0 defeat against Everton.

Wolves needed to respond after being beaten 4-2 by Bournemouth, but produced an utterly abysmal performance at Goodison Park.

It was another defensive horror show, as the Wolves players conceded from several set-pieces.

Craig Dawson endured one of his worst performances in a Wolves shirt, scoring two own goals, and there was another poor display between the sticks from Jose Sa.

Wolves fans chanted against O’Neil at Goodison Park after the full-time whistle, and it’s very possible he could be sacked today.

The one thing that could keep him in place though is the fact there’s a quick turnaround with the West Ham game coming up on Monday.

O’Neil gave his thoughts after last night’s game, and delivered a verdict that was very alarming.

Gary O’Neil says Wolves couldn’t cope with Everton’s physicality

After the game, O’Neil spoke about working hard to pull Wolves out of their current rut.

But the Wolves manager looked forlorn, as if he was expecting to be contacted by his superiors at the club.

O’Neil offered his assessment last night that reads rather embarrasingly, pointing to Everton’s physicality as being the key to the gulf between the two sides.

He said (as quoted by Wolves official): “Basic stuff. We can’t even get the wall in the right place. We weren’t able to cope with Everton’s physicality, long balls, balls in the box, just unable to cope. An awful lot of work to be done to give the group a better chance in games coming next. Try and find a way to give them more of a platform to have a chance. As I’ve said a million times, the other stuff is irrelevant, because we’re giving away so many goals from situations that are fairly basic.

“Bournemouth are a pressing team, and we can’t cope with that, Everton are a physical team, and we didn’t cope with that. So, there’s an awful lot that we need to get into them to try and find a way to give this team more of a chance on a consistent basis.”

O’Neil added that he was happy to take full responsibility for the result, in an attempt to try and take away any blame from the players.

A shambolic performance

Most fans will also be able to accept when their team falls short against a side that has shown more quality.

But few will ever be able to accept their team being outfought.

Wolves did indeed struggle badly against Everton’s physicality, with several players looking like they just didn’t want to know.

Challenges were being shirked, and there were some players not contested aerial duels and it was all just a total mess – and one that could end up costing O’Neil his job.

It’s now very hard to make a case for him to stay. Even during the unbeaten run, Wolves just didn’t look convincing and it’s high time Fosun did something about it.
