Arne Slot saw Liverpool’s run of seven consecutive wins in all competitions come to an end at Newcastle on Wednesday.
In what was a thrilling Premier League clash, the Reds were held to a 3-3 draw by the Magpies, following a 90th minute error from Caoimhin Kelleher which allowed Fabian Schar to equalise.
It was a result which reduced Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Manchester United and Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Southampton, while Newcastle sit tenth.
Arne Slot must have been very frustrated to see his Liverpool side squander all three points in the 90th minute, especially after fighting back from behind twice to lead 3-2, although the Dutchman still found time to praise an opposition player in Alexander Isak during his post-match interview.
Arne Slot hails stunning strike from Alexander Isak
It was the Sweden international who put Newcastle 1-0 up in the 35th minute with an otherworldly effort, rifling the ball beyond Kelleher and into the top corner with some power from long range.

Slot was impressed enough by this strike to mention it during his post-match press conference, with Liverpool’s official website quoting the 46-year-old as saying: “Especially the first one, what a finish that was, from them I mean. Ours was a great finish as well, but that shot from Isak, I don’t even know if Caoimh (Kelleher) saw that goal, as hard as it was.”
The Newcastle No.14 has surely put himself in contention to win the Goal of the Season award with his superb effort – which was his fifth Premier League goal in 12 appearances this season.
Liverpool fortunate not to concede another vs Newcastle
While Liverpool deserve immense credit for fighting back twice to lead inside one of England’s most raucous atmospheres, the Reds were a tad fortunate not to concede a penalty after Jarell Quansah upended Isak.
Gary Lineker felt it was a penalty when analysing the incident on Match of the Day on Wednesday night – Martin Keown agreed – although Andy Madley nor those in the VAR booth believed it was a foul.
Madley also booked Alexis Mac Allister for a soft foul – meaning the Argentine will miss the Merseyside derby on Saturday – so Liverpool can be both pleased and annoyed at the referee on this occasion.
