Cole Palmer sends hilarious message to Christopher Nkunku after stealing his goal in Chelsea vs Southampton

There was a really positive feeling surrounding Chelsea’s 5-1 win against Southampton against St. Mary’s last night.

Chelsea fans were chanting at Enzo Maresca to show their joy at where their club finds themselves right now, with the boss responding by applauding the travelling supporters.

The manager made seven changes to his starting side last night, with the likes of Christopher Nkunku being handed a rare Premier League start.

The Frenchman scored his 12th goal of the season in the first half, while also assisting a goal late on in a fine performance up top.

The assist he registered was to Cole Palmer, however could easily have ended up in another goal as his strike was headed goalwards before the England international touched it over the line.

It was clear there was no bad blood between the two after the incident, shown by the broad smile on Nkunku’s face as Palmer wheeled away in celebration.

Palmer took to Instagram to praise the team and their supporters, whilst also offering a cheeky apology to his teammate for the moment.

He said: “Top win, top support. Sorry Nkunku, but my FPL manager’s needed me.”

Palmer currently sits on more combined goals and assists than appearances in the Premier League this season, while Nkunku extended his lead as the club’s top scorer in all competitions.

Could Palmer and Nkunku play together more often?

The fact both Palmer and Nkunku want to play in similar roles ideally has made it very rare that both are on the pitch at the same time for Chelsea.

Maresca has already hinted Palmer and Joao Felix could be about to feature more together, and this has been the case in two of the last three Premier League games.

It seems as if the Italian sees the Frenchman as an option to play up front, and his appearances are therefore going to be limited for some time due to the brilliance of Nicolas Jackson.
