Enzo Maresca has to go against his word and start‘fantastic’ Chelsea player vs Tottenham – opinion

Enzo Maresca will likely be happier with Chelsea’s win last night than the majority of their victories this season.

The manager took the risk of rotating heavily for the trip to Southampton, despite three points being ever-so crucial in the Premier League going into the festive period.

A number of his players backed up his decision to be given a rare start last night, with Joao Felix starring in particular.

The backline that had kept a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge against Aston Villa was almost completely different. Only Marc Cucurella survived of any defenders or goalkeepers.

Filip Jorgensen deserves a start for Chelsea vs Tottenham

This meant that Filip Jorgensen was given his first Premier League start since joining the club over the summer, and he did little to harm his chances of making more appearances in the future.

Chelsea fans have called for Jorgensen to start for some time now, and will be hoping that his appearance at St. Mary’s in the 5-1 thrashing is the start of a regular run in the team.

Robert Sanchez has been called upon for every league game so far this season, and has maintained the unwavering support of Maresca despite not always having it of supporters.

The manager has already said Sanchez will start the next game against Tottenham, however last night’s assured performance between the sticks should remain in his mind when picking that side.

Fingers have been pointed at the Spaniard a number of times for goals conceded this season, and there is certainly a worry inside the stadium whenever he is in possession of the ball.

Chelsea reportedly believe that Jorgensen suits Maresca’s style perfectly, and the boss has already described the goalkeeper as ‘fantastic’.

However, the best way to prove this is by giving him the opportunities in bigger games than the Conference League, with the best opportunity for that being at the weekend against one of their biggest rivals.
