Former Man City midfielder ‘set to snub’ Manchester United transfer in January

Douglas Luiz of Juventus looks on

Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz has been linked with Manchester United

Reports in Italy are claiming that Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz will snub any transfer approach from Manchester United next year, despite his flailing form in Turin.

The 26-year-old, who was sold for around £43million by Aston Villa this summer, only started two of his first nine matches before suffering injury in October, a setback he is still nursing. As a result, there had been rumours of an early exit in January.

Speculation had suggested that Juventus chief Cristiano Giuntoli has in fact offered Luiz, who spent two years at Manchester City between 2017 and 2019 without earning his senior debut, to United in January.

However, this claim has now been disputed, and Tuttosport states that Luiz wishes to stay in Italy and prove his worth. United are not anticipated to spend big in January.

The club splashed more than £200m in transfers this summer, totalling a net spend of just over £100m. One of those bought was Paris Saint-Germain pivot Manuel Ugarte, who is a defensive midfielder like Luiz.

Rumours suggest United are more keen on tying down a new wing-back amid questions over the long-term impact of Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw. Malacia has played just twice after an 18-month absence due to setbacks following major knee surgery in the summer of 2023.

Shaw, meanwhile, has played only three games for United since February and has just suffered another minor setback.

Alphonso Davies is one name who has been linked with a switch to United with his Bayern Munich contract set to expire in June. He is permitted to speak to United from January.
