Leicester City midfielder Ruby Mace earned her first senior England cap this week, as the Lionesses beat Switzerland in an international friendly.
Leicester City signed Ruby Mace from Manchester City in the 2024 window. The permanent transfer came after a successful loan spell in the East Midlands and since signing, Leicester have benefitted tremendously from the signing.
It is safe to say that Ruby Mace was a statement signing by the Foxes, since she was also wanted by Atlético Madrid and even Chelsea.
The midfielder, who can also play in the defence, is still young. Mace is one of the most promising players at England right now. Therefore, it was a great moment to witness the 21-year-old earn her first senior England cap this week.
Against Switzerland in an international friendly on Tuesday night, Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman made some wholesale changes to her squad. England lined up in a rotated manner, with some key players rested. This only handed a great opportunity to some upcoming England stars.
Ruby Mace was one of the players to benefit from Wiegman's game-plan. She started the match and played just over one hour, showcasing her incredible potential and putting herself on a pedestal for future consideration.
Since first breaking through as a youngster, Ruby Mace has frequented the England youth setup. She has made appearances at most levels, from the U17 to the U19 and U23s. After a whole year of impressing with the U23s and developing ahead of time, Mace achieved her first senior England cap.
Mace was, understandably, very proud to make her England debut. Speaking to the media after the match, she didn't take long to highlight the importance of the support from her mother.
In her own words, Mace said: “It’s so important for me [to make my debut], I’m a little bit lost for words but I’m so happy and I hope that I made my family proud... Ultimately, I have to thank my coaches but the most important person to me is my mum, she’s always there for me and driving me around the country. I dedicate that to her tonight.”
Breaking into the England midfield is a tough ask. Therefore, this only makes last night's achievement even more impressive. While we don't want to jump the gun too much, we are sure it is only the beginning of Mace's incredible senior England career.
