Fabian Schar has admitted he tried to keep the ball in play rather than shoot after rescuing Newcastle United at the death.
The wind appeared to have been sapped from Newcastle’s sails when Mohamed Salah edged Liverpool in front on 83 minutes. United led on two occasions through Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon until the Premier League leaders fought back.
It appeared to be another frustrating defeat for the Magpies despite a valiant performance - and then Schar struck as the clock entered stoppage time. Bruno Guimaraes looped a deep free-kick from the right flank into the danger area, with the ball dumbfounding Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Schar was there to pounce at the back post as the ball crept into the bottom corner - sending St James’ Park into raptures. The result means Newcastle snuck into the top 10 as Liverpool’s lead at the top was cut to seven points, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea earning wins.
But what might shock Toon fans most of all is how Schar never meant to score. Speaking post-match, the 32-year-old confessed to knowing little about his equalising strike.

Eddie Howe reflected on his “mixed emotions” following the game due to Newcastle leading twice against the table toppers. He added: “It’s mixed emotions. Part of me feels we should have won it, a big part of me, but part of me is pleased we didn’t lose either because it was such a late goal for us.
“Generally, I’m just pleased with the performance. There was much more attacking output and a much better feel about the team. There was much better energy, and it was a really good performance against, for me, the best team we’ve played so far this season in the Premier League. So it was a big jump forward for us.”
