The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) have revealed that Alex Scott MBE, Gilly Flaherty, Rebecca Welch and Steph Houghton MBE are the 2024 Barclays Women’s Super League Hall of Fame inductees.
The Hall of Fame recognises footballing personalities of past and present that have made significant contributions to the growth of the game. Each year, a dedicated panel of experts select new inductees for the Hall of Fame.
WSL Full-Time received an official press release from The Women’s Professional Game this morning confirming that Alex Scott MBE, Gilly Flaherty, Rebecca Welch and Steph Houghton MBE are the 2024 inductees.
Former Arsenal defender Scott won 21 trophies with the club spread across three spells in North London. She won the Barclays Women’s Super League with The Gunners in 2012. Since hanging up her boots, Scott has continued to champion the women’s game in the world of football punditry.
Former centre-back Flaherty spent almost two decades playing at the top level of women’s football with Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham United and Liverpool. Flaherty won four Barclays Women’s Super League titles – two with Arsenal and two with Chelsea. The defender was also a 2017 FA Women’s Super League 1 Spring Series winner with The Blues.
Referee Welch becomes the first official to be entered into the Hall of Fame. She has led the way for officiating in the women’s game since starting out in 2010. Prior to retiring earlier this year, Welch was seen as one of the best referees in the women’s game. She represented her country as a UEFA and FIFA official whilst creating history in the men’s game, overseeing matches in the Premier League and in the domestic cups.
Defender Houghton also retired earlier this year off the back of a glittering career for both club and country. The 36-year-old won two Barclays Women’s Super League titles with Arsenal before adding a further title-winner’s medal to her collection at Manchester City. Houghton is amongst the top 20 appearance-makers of all-time in the Barclays Women’s Super League and she has plenty left to offer the game post-retirement.
The four 2024 Barclays Women’s Super League Hall of Fame inductees will be honoured at a special ceremony next month.
